Guide to Selecting Dock Levelers for Cold Stores

Blog 2026-08-14

A cold store dock leveler is a specialised low-temperature hydraulic levelling device installed within the pit of a cold store loading bay. It is primarily used to eliminate the height difference between the body of a refrigerated lorry and the cold store loading bay, facilitating the safe entry and exit of forklift trucks to carry out goods handling operations.

There are four main types of cold store dock levelers in common use:

Retractable Dock Leveler

Suitable for: frozen foods, seafood cold chain, pharmaceutical cold stores, 24-hour high-frequency loading and unloading, and deep-freeze zones between -18°C and -28°C

Key advantages

The lip extends by 600/800/1000 mm, fully entering the interior of the refrigerated vehicle to minimise the gap between the loading bay and the vehicle, reducing cold loss by over 60 per cent;

When retracted, the platform sinks completely into the foundation pit, allowing the insulated door to seal tightly against the floor, eliminating thermal bridges caused by draughts;

Compatible with refrigerated vans and semi-trailers of varying heights, lengths and configurations;

Hydraulic Fixed Dock Leveler

Suitable for: Fruit and vegetable preservation warehouses (0–4°C), small-scale frozen storage facilities, operations with up to 30 loading/unloading cycles per day, and projects with limited budgets

Advantages: Simple structure, low cost, straightforward pit construction, and universal spare parts;

Vertical-lift Dock Leveler

Suitable for: Biopharmaceuticals, vaccine storage, high-standard constant-temperature deep-freeze warehouses, and facilities with extremely strict energy consumption controls

Advantages: Vertically retractable with no exposed structure; fully covered with polyurethane insulation at the base, resulting in extremely low thermal conductivity; Can be fully integrated with doors, door curtains and limiters to achieve virtually zero cold loss;

Edge-mounted Dock Leveler

Edge-mounted dock leveller: No need for deep excavation; installed at the edge of the existing loading bay. Suitable only for 0–4°C fresh-keeping cold stores with a height difference of ≤30 cm; poor sealing, not suitable for low-temperature freezing zones;

Selection Parameters for Cold Store Dock Levelers

Rated Load Capacity (taking into account load capacity reduction at low temperatures and allowing for a safety margin)

Small-item electric pallet truck sorting: 6 tonnes

Standard internal combustion forklifts and full pallet frozen goods: 10 tonnes (most commonly used in cold stores)

Heavy-duty fully loaded seafood and heavy-duty forklifts: 12–15 tonnes

Platform Dimensions

Width: 2000/2200/2400 mm; select 2400 mm for simultaneous operation with two pallets;

Length: Tilting model 2000–2500 mm; telescopic model 2500–3000 mm;

Lifting stroke: Standard ±300 mm; customised for multi-vehicle cold chain warehouses ±400 mm, compatible with refrigerated vehicle compartment heights of 1.2–1.6 m.

Configuration Standards for Cold Store Dock Levelers

Hydraulic Anti-Freeze System

Hydraulic oil: Fully synthetic low-temperature HS22/HV32, pour point ≤ -45°C; standard 46# ambient-temperature hydraulic oil is not permitted;

Heating system: Temperature-controlled immersion heater in the oil tank (500–1000 W), electric heating tape wrapped around oil pipes, with automatic anti-freeze activation at low temperatures;

Seals: All cylinders and piping throughout the unit are fitted with FKM fluorocarbon rubber seals, with a temperature resistance range of –40°C to 150°C; standard rubber seals are prone to brittle fracture and oil leakage at low temperatures;

Articulated Joints: Filled with specialised low-temperature grease to prevent jamming caused by frost and snow.

Corrosion-resistant and non-slip construction

Work surface: 304 stainless steel non-slip chequered plate as standard for cold stores and deep-freeze rooms; thickened galvanised non-slip plates are optional for fresh-keeping rooms;

Main Frame: The entire unit is hot-dip galvanised and finished with high-temperature electrostatic powder coating; all hinges, bolts and tongue plates are made of 304 stainless steel to resist corrosion from de-icing brine and cold store moisture;

Foundation Pit Fittings: The inner walls of the foundation pit are lined with a 100 mm polyurethane insulation layer and a damp-proof vapour barrier to eliminate thermal bridges from the ground and prevent ground frost heave and cracking.

Frost-proof electrical control system

Control box: 304 stainless steel housing, IP65 protection, with built-in PTC constant-temperature heating and dehumidification modules to prevent contactors from freezing and failing;

Cables: Cold-resistant TPU silicone rubber cables that do not harden or crack at low temperatures;

Control buttons: Large, frost-proof buttons that can be operated whilst wearing thick cold-store gloves.

Cold store dock levelers must be used as part of a complete system to achieve energy-efficient temperature control: this includes door seals, insulated sectional doors, hydraulic vehicle restraints and dock bumpers. The doors and levelling platform can only be opened and extended once the lorry has been secured; once loading and unloading are complete, they are retracted and closed in sequence to minimise the loss of cold air.
